Un nouveau Padawan ? :06:

Syringa vulgaris, the common lilac, is my all-time favorite bow wood. I probably wouldn't bother using other woods if big-enough lilac was available more often. Extremely strong in all categories. I am not aware of anyone using lilac for bows prior to my discovery some five years back. Someone must've done it. I was instantly hooked. Two-inch trunks yield high-cast, minimal-set hunting bows less than one inch wide at midlimb. But most lilac grown on open, dry land is twisted and gnarly beyond hope, and thin-ringed, too. Good lilac grows on rich soil with lots of competition (and wind shelter) from the surrounding vegetation. This stuff has solid, three-millimeter rings, dry density in the .90's and a sweet, purple-streaked heartwood that polishes to a glass finish.
